Land & People of the Willamette Valley: A History Shaped by the River Exhibit
Picture the Willamette Valley thousands
of years ago—the splash of salmon at the
Willamette Falls, the smell of smoke rising
from village fires, and the sight of canoes
gliding across the water. Indigenous People
lived here since time immemorial, gathering
food, fishing, and building community along
the valley’s waterways. In the 1800s, fur
traders and overlanders followed, establishing
farms and towns. Soon, steamboats whistled,
ferries churned, and railroads roared,
reshaping the land. Over time, people from
many cultures—Black, Chinese, Japanese,
Latino, and White—wove their lives into
the valley, each leaving a lasting mark on the
place they came to call home.
